Fitting the Pieces Together.
The “Prey” novels, by John Sandford, are well-known for their suspenseful murder mysteries and unorthodox detective work. When creating a concept for the redesign of these book covers, a distinct look and feel was needed in order to create a recognizable identity throughout the series.
The concept statement was rendered visually by photographing a simple, key element in each detective case and ripping the photo into pieces. The pieces were then laid out in a way that showed the picture but still in a ripped up fashion. One piece was then taken away (in a murder mystery, the story never fully comes together until the end of the book). It was important for the images to stand out, so a simple black background colour was used to set the mood of the mystery. A bold title was placed at the top of the book to ensure that this popular series is easily identified.
